Congratulations on completing the transition from player to coach! Phil Jackson's playing years - from riding pine to starting for the Knicks - no doubt helped him succeed as a head coach. I'm sure your startup experience (as a player) and time with FRC (as an assistant coach) will lead to at least 11 championship exits for you as well!

Will FRC be hiring new associates who also love committing 100% of their energy to helping amazing entrepreneurs build great companies for fund IV?

As an entrepreneur, I think about this ratio quite a bit--although I didn't know it had a name. I actually think about this ratio much more than the "Should Do/Do" ratio. One of the key characteristics of a startup is lack of track record. I mean that term very loosely...you and your team, by definition, lack a past record of accomplishment in whatever particular endeavor you're attempting. Therefore, what I _say_ is of utmost importance to me and should be to my constituents (investors, advisors, customers, etc.) as well. It is my track record in the making.

The objectives and key results approach (at Google and elsewhere) is a little different in terms of approach, but I think at the end of the day it also biases heavily towards action and while the high level goals may not be achieved (or if you get them all they were not aggressive enough), in the scoring/evaluation of performance, I bet a say/do ratio of less than one at a slightly more granular level is still a good indicator of success.

The doing more than you say you will do is different from the idea at Google, where you set impossible goals (and if you reach all your goals, it's viewed as a failure because you weren't setting your sights high enough). But maybe here you're not thinking strictly in terms of "goals" but more so in terms of not wanting to be "all talk".

I really like the "be schizophrenic" instruction. When building websites in Drupal, there's a module called "Masquerade" where admins can jump into different roles so that they can see the website like non-admins. It's a very direct way to be schizophrenic about seeing things through the eyes of your users, and it is essential to getting it right for them.

Don't you think, though, that founders need to actually identify with their users, not just research them? If you didn't grow up on Basketball, could you really identify with AND1 or would your audience have called you out for being phony?

I think it boils down to authenticity. And you're right: "Aft" doesn't land with most people. It's not about you relating to your users, though. Its about your users relating to you. Get that right and you win.
